Russian missile attacks wound 11 in Kyiv

Russian missile and drone attacks wounded at least 11 people in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as part of a wider overnight barrage that struck several cities across the country. The assault caused fires and damage to infrastructure and added to a mounting civilian toll in the capital in recent weeks.

The attack on Kyiv and beyond

In Kyiv, the strikes wounded at least 11 civilians and set off fires, including a blaze at an electrical substation and a burning office building in the city. Ukrainian officials reported that the wider assault involved ballistic and cruise missiles alongside more than a hundred drones, launched from Russian territory.

Air defences shot down most of the incoming drones and some cruise missiles, but officials said all of the ballistic missiles broke through. The attacks were not confined to the capital: casualties were also reported in Sumy, Odesa, Kharkiv and Sloviansk, with the deadliest toll in Sumy.

Infrastructure hit and a Ukrainian response

Across the country, numerous infrastructure sites were struck, including a railway locomotive and energy facilities, with a large fire reported at one regional site. In the capital, officials noted that dozens of people had been killed over the preceding weeks as such attacks continued.

Ukraine, for its part, said it had carried out strikes on Russian vessels, reporting damage to fuel tankers and other ships in the Sea of Azov as the two sides traded long-range attacks.

Why it matters

The repeated targeting of cities far from the front line, and the damage to power and transport systems, illustrate how the war continues to grind down civilian life in Ukraine. Each barrage that penetrates air defences is a reminder of the human cost of a conflict that has displaced millions and continues to draw international concern.
