Mexico investigates whether US lied about role in capture of drug lord

Mexico has opened an investigation into whether the United States misrepresented its involvement in the 2024 capture of a senior Sinaloa cartel figure on Mexican soil, a question that touches directly on the country's sovereignty. For years, the US denied any role in the operation, but recent reporting has suggested a US federal agency was involved, prompting officials in Mexico to demand answers.

The disputed operation

The case concerns Ismael Zambada García, a founder of the Sinaloa cartel, who was detained in 2024. According to accounts of the episode, he was lured by a fellow trafficker onto a small plane inside Mexico that then flew to Texas, where US authorities arrested both men near El Paso. Mexican officials have repeatedly questioned Washington about its role and complained of being left in the dark, while the US ambassador at the time insisted the US was not involved.

Mexico's attorney general said that if recent reports were confirmed, they would point to serious violations of Mexican and international law and a false statement by a US diplomat. The former ambassador reiterated his denial. Complicating the picture, the aircraft involved was later put on public display at a US museum, where an accompanying plaque credited two federal agents with executing the arrest.

A delicate diplomatic moment

Although the events took place under Mexico's previous administration, the dispute has surfaced at a tense point in relations between the two countries. There have been repeated threats from the US side to take direct action against cartels inside Mexico, heightening fears about sovereignty. Officials said Mexican authorities had been prevented from thoroughly inspecting the aircraft and had been given inaccurate identification data for it.
